What it is
A walkway running between dense stands of tall moso bamboo on the western edge of the city, behind Tenryū-ji in the Sagano district.
The stems are close-set and very tall, so the light arrives green and the noise of the place changes — bamboo in wind is a sound rather than a rustle.
⚠️ What the photographs do not show
It is a few hundred metres long, and it is one of the busiest paths in Kyoto. Every photograph you have seen of an empty green corridor was taken either at dawn or with a great deal of patience, and usually both.
⭐ This is the clearest case in the city of the image and the place being different things. It is still worth doing — just plan it as ten minutes at the start of a day in Arashiyama, not as an afternoon.
Making it work
Come first thing. The grove is a public path rather than an attraction with a gate, so the early hour costs nothing but the alarm.
